As we grow older, as the body ages, we begin to have a more direct awareness of the truth of impermanence. Life begins to reflect the natural changes that occur with ageing, sickness, old age and death. During the process of aging, we are at risk of identifying with concepts and beliefs associated with inevitable decline and fear of loss. This unconscious conditioning drains our minds, hearts and bodies of energy and interest in the miracle of life, and the possibility of developing a wise, compassionate presence during this phase of existence.

Throughout this “at home” retreat, the truth of impermanence and perpetual change will be guiding themes that inspire contemplation, meditation and discussion. Vipassana (insight meditation) calms impulses associated with craving, clinging and grasping. The cultivation of metta protects the mind from falling into the shadow play of fear and aversion that take the forms of self-judgment, resentment and guilt. Both of these practices give rise to a sense of beauty and ease – that may include the moment of letting go during the death of this precious body.

The retreat schedule will include:

  • Group sitting and walking meditation, discussion periods and evening talks on the dharma of aging
  • Home-based practice times to merge practice with daily life, including brief contact with others in your household.
  • Individual meetings with DaeJa

This program is designed for practitioners aged 60 and over who have completed at least one week-long Vipassana (insight meditation) retreat, either in person or online.

All registrations are subject to our new 2024 cancellation policy. All retreatants must review and agree to this policy upon registration.

For our 2024 retreats, three fee tiers are offered. Please choose the option that best fits your ability to give in this time. Any amount paid above the Base rate is a tax deductible contribution to Southern Dharma Retreat Center. Your confirmation email is your receipt for tax purposes.

We are deeply grateful for your support.

Note that registration fees do not include dana for the teacher(s). In the Buddhist tradition the teachings are offered freely and teachers are not paid for their offerings. They rely on dana contributions from students. Similarly, Southern Dharma keeps registration fees low to ensure the Dharma is accessible to all. Fees cover only a fraction of Southern Dharma’s operating expenses. We appreciate your practice of generosity to continue the dissemination of the Dharma.

Southern Dharma provides session recordings to participants who are joining from more than 3 time zones away. Please be sure to indicate that you are interested in this option during the registration process.

Southern Dharma is now offering 50% scholarship awards for BIPOC and Young Adults, in addition to those with financial need. Indicate your interest in a Southern Dharma in-house scholarship during the registration process.
